What are assisted dying, assisted suicide and euthanasia?

Assisted dying, assisted suicide and euthanasia are all terms used to describe the practice of intentionally ending someone’s life to relieve their suffering. While these terms are often used interchangeably, there are important distinctions between them.

Assisted dying

Assisted dying refers to the act of providing someone with the means to end their own life, but the person takes the final action themselves. This typically involves prescribing medication that the person can self-administer to bring about their own death. Assisted dying is legal in some countries under strict conditions.

Assisted suicide

Assisted suicide is similar to assisted dying, but in this case, the person may need assistance from another individual to administer the medication or perform the action that will end their life. Assisted suicide is also legal in some countries, but under specific regulations and safeguards.

Euthanasia

Euthanasia, on the other hand, involves a third party, such as a doctor or caregiver, actively ending the person’s life, usually by administering a lethal injection. Euthanasia is more controversial and is only legal in a few countries, again with stringent criteria and safeguards in place.

These practices raise ethical, legal and moral dilemmas, with arguments both for and against them. Supporters argue that assisted dying, assisted suicide and euthanasia can provide a compassionate and dignified end for those suffering from terminal illness or unbearable pain. Opponents, however, may worry about the potential for abuse, coercion or the devaluation of human life.

It is crucial to have open and informed discussions about these complex issues to ensure that the rights and well-being of individuals are respected, while also safeguarding against potential harm.
